Update on Pseudotumor Cerebri (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension)

چکیده
In 1904 the German neurologist Max Nonne introduced the term pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) to describe the clinical syndrome of chronically elevated intracranial pressure of unknown etiology. As diagnostic options grew broader and more effective over time, however, numerous pathological conditions that can cause chronically high intracranial pressure were identified, which occasioned its classification into a primary and secondary form. For years the term pseudotumor cerebri has been used as an umbrella term for chronic intracranial hypertension without further specifying its underlying cause. Pseudotumor cerebri has a primary form, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), and various secondary forms that can co-occur with other diseases, such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis or hormonal changes[1, 2]. The following review is limited to the primary form of PTC. The prevalence of IIH is 8.6 cases per 100 000 in the general population [3, 4], although the number is probably much higher considering that existing epidemiological studies are several decades old and apply different diagnostic criteria. Moreover, because the clinical presentation of IIH can be so similar to other primary headache disorders such as migraine or tension-type headache, especially their chronic forms, the disease may be underdiagnosed [5, 6]. Furthermore, most persons suffering from IIH are overweight [7, 8]; against the backdrop of increasing worldwide obesity, the Update on Pseudotumor Cerebri (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension)

Pseudotumor Cerebri (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension) an Update
1.1 History Historically, several terms have been used to depict pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). In the late 1890's, Quincke (1893, 1897) was the first to describe and name this syndrome "meningitis serosa" patients suffering from headache, impaired visual acuity and papilledema. He related the symptoms to a state of elevated intracranial pressure and presumed it was caused by increased secretion of...

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension, also known as pseudotumor cerebri, is an unexplained increase in intracranial pressure associated with permanent severe visual loss in 25% of cases and debilitating headaches. The condition is often associated with obesity. The Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial, a large, randomized, collaborative clinical trial, evaluated the efficacy of ...
متن کاملPediatric idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), or pseudotumor cerebri, is a condition of elevated intracranial pressure in the absence of clinical, laboratory or radiological evidence of an intracranial space occupying lesion that can occur in the pediatric population. While IIH is more commonly recognized as a disorder of adults, it affects children of all ages and can have distinctive characteri...

BACKGROUND Pseudotumor cerebri, or idiopathic intracranial hypertension, is a condition most commonly affecting women of childbearing age who are obese or who have experienced recent weight gain. Frequently the patient complains of headache accompanied by dizziness, nausea, or visual defects, and it is characterized by elevated intracranial pressure in the absence of a space-occupying lesion or...
متن کاملHIV-associated pseudotumor cerebri: a case report and literature review.
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a cause of vision loss in HIV-positive patients. In many patients with controlled HIV disease, idiopathic intracranial hypertension develops without any other apparent cause. We report the case of an HIV-infected man in whom idiopathic intracranial hypertension developed, and despite therapy with repeated lumbar puncture, acetazolamide, and neurosurgical ...
